The Argentavis (Ar-jen-tay-vis) is a species of Bird in ARK Survival Evolved.
Basic Info
Dossier
- Wild: Lording over the skies across the island, Argentavis atrocollum has few aerial rivals. It is a small consolation for the island's other avian Creatures, then, that Argentavis seems to have little interest in anything alive. Although they are not interested in many animals, Argentavis will attack any human within sight making them an aerial threat to many humans with basic equipment.
- Domesticated: Argentavis is actually slower than the far more common Pteranodon, but it has significantly more Stamina, and can sustain flight for approximately three times as long. This makes them the best Creatures on the island for traveling or hauling cargo over long distances.
- Known Information: Quite apart from what I would have guessed, Argentavis does not have the stooped neck typical of modern buzzards and vultures. It is unknown if it adapted this stronger neck to deal with predators on the island, or if its lineage comes from before the stooped neck became common in carrion-eating birds.
Behavior
The Argentavis is territorial and will attack you if you get too close. It is a highly aggressive creature, willing to chase players long distances for simply being within its vision. Argentavis are scavengers, so they will be attracted by dead bodies from a surprising distance away. [1]
Appearance
Argentavis is a vulture like creature with brown feathers. It has a sharp beak and black feet with long talons, which are its primary method of attack. Does come in multiple color variations however it seems that the brown one is the more dominant one out of the colors.

KO Strategy
They aren't as fast as the Pteranodon and they will attack you, so it's relatively easy to take them out with tranq arrows. Just be on the look out for surrounding animals, Argentavis tends to spawn on mountains.
- 10 - 20 Tranquilizer Arrows
Utility
Roles

- Transport: Great for long distance transport. (Level up in Weight, Speed, and Stamina)
- Flying Mount: Slower than the pteradon but much longer in the wing. (Level up in Speed and Stamina)
- Player Killer: Capable of grabbing players off mounts or off the ground and dropping them from great height. (Level up in Stamina, Health, and Speed)

Flight
Flying a Argentavis uses similar controls to movement on ground level with a few exceptions. Quirks :
- Will only move forward upon command. With no forward command issued they will eventually stall to a halt and hover in mid-air. Even while not moving Argentavis lose a small bit of stamina just to stay aloft.
- Feeding Stimberry or Stimulant to a Argentavis in-flight can allow you to fly for longer periods, but the stamina gain is minor at best and very inefficient.
- Landing is accomplished by moving close to the ground, using your assigned reverse command, and when you have stalled press spacebar. You will dismount, your Argentavis will land, and walk a short distance away before coming to rest. Performing the All Stop Following whistle right after jumping off via spacebar will make the Argentavis stop in almost any case immediately.
Note : Tamed and unridden Argentavis do not lose stamina while sprinting to keep up with a player running or riding another dino. - You can use this quirk to carry large amounts of weight quickly with an Argentavis set to follow.
Carrying
An Argentavis is capable of carrying smaller creatures. This is done by using the alt-fire button (default: right click) while flying or hovering over the creature. The Argentavis will swing its legs forward in an animation similar to its attack. If the grab was successful, you will be able to see the creature being pulled behind the Argentavis, as well as its name and level. This is very useful for separating a small, high-level animal such as a raptor from a pack so that you an tame it elsewhere. The Argentavis can attack creatures it is carrying by using the default attack button, or release them by pressing alt-fire again. The creature being carried can not attack the Argentavis while it is being carried, but can land a hit when it is picked up or dropped.
Currently on PVE servers wild animals may not be picked up
Carry-able Creatures
The Argentavis is capable of carrying the following creatures:
Notes/Trivia
- Before Version 176.0, Argentavis was actually capable of regaining stamina mid-flight. All one had to do was stop flying forward and wait a while for the stamina to refill.
- After 175.0 Argentavis can pick up players and dinos, too. The Pteranodon was the only flying type that possessed this ability before 175.0.
- There is a typo in their dossier where it reads "to best creatures" rather than "the best creatures".
- Argentavis is very susceptible to headshots and will usually go down after 1-5 shots with a ranged weapon depending on level.
