The Ferox is a Creature in ARK: Survival Evolved's Expansion Pack Genesis: Part 1.

Basic Info[]

Behavior[]

The Ferox will approach the survivor when it senses one nearby on foot. It makes a sniffing gesture towards the survivor and if they do not carry any element with them, it flees, sometimes returning to follow. There is a chance, however, that it will instead mutate into its giant form rather than making a gesture, taking more of an aggressive approach, even if not fed Element.

Under its mutated giant form, it kills everything in sight until it reverts back to its small form.

Appearance[]

The Ferox is similar in appearance to that of a Jerboa Jerboa while in its smaller form. Upon consuming Element Element, it transforms into a larger, more aggressive version of itself that is more Wolf-like in facial features and with massive muscles. Both forms have six limbs, with the middle arms being slightly smaller than the top ones.

Color Scheme and Regions[]

This section displays the Ferox's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Ferox. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Ferox will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.

This information can be used to alter the Ferox's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID> in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6 would color the Ferox's "back" magenta.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]

Ferox

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Combat[]

This section describes how to fight against the Ferox.

General[]

  • The Ferox is a very fragile creature; it poses no danger unless fed Element Element. However, if you are on foot and approach, there is a 20% chance it will transform once it's at your feet, even if you have no element. If you have a Tek Helmet on and it's set to see creatures, the Ferox will be highlighted red.

Strategy[]

  • When the Ferox is not in its aggressive state, a melee weapon such as a Sword or Pike would work best. Any combat creature can also easily dispose of a passive Ferox.
  • When the Ferox is in its aggressive state, a ranged weapon such as an Assault Rifle would work very well. Otherwise you can evade it until it reverts back to its passive form, then kill it if possible.
  • Another approach would be to knock it out while in its small form (easily done with an equus, crossbow, or simply punches) then beat it to death.

Weaponry[]

  • Nearly all types of weapons can kill a Ferox while it is passive. When it's aggressive you will want to resort to staying at range since their damage is very high.

Dangers[]

  • When the Ferox is in its aggressive form its stats are boosted exponentially. It can also dismount players which can leave you vulnerable to a beating.

Weakness[]

  • When the Ferox is not in its aggressive form, its health and other stats are very low. It also cannot retain its aggressive form for long in the wild so you can just wait it out.
  • The Ferox used to be able to be bola'ed and momentarily stunned in its aggressive form. (This is no longer the case and attempts to do so will only lead to unfortunate death.)

Taming[]

Now that it's tame, I hope it stays that cute!
~ HLN-A

Ferox can be tamed non-violently rather than through the usual methods. However, it can't be tamed while in its giant mutated form. You must not have a Ferox on your shoulder during taming. There is a rare glitch that when a tamed ferox reverts back to its small form, It dissolves.

With Element Element in any slot, approach the Ferox and use the element to begin taming. Be ready to run away as the Ferox shapeshifts into an aggressive giant and will then proceed to chase after the survivor who fed it, and will continue to pursue until it reverts back to its small self. This has to be repeated until it is tamed after the last revert. Number of transformations that are required is 2 at level 1, and grows linearly up to 20 at level 150 (roughly 0.12 transformations needed per a level).

One of the known tactics is to encase it around a giant trap base by luring it while in its giant form with a speedy dino.

Another tactic is if you are in a cave you can feed it element and grapple to the roof of the cave and repeat until it is tamed. It is the same for trees or large cliff/walls as you can grapple to the top of them.

You can also use a Bloodstalker to grab the Ferox after it transforms and hold it in place until it transforms back, then repeat the procedure after feeding it element. Just don't reel it in and start feeding on it. If you do so by mistake, release it and get to safety, then web it again if needed.

You can also use a good shield and keep your back to a wall. Clear your area before beginning this tame as the zone is filled with Direwolf Dire Wolves and X-Yutyrannus X-Yutyrannus.

Another good way to tame a Ferox is if you can get your hands on a Shadowmane. Feed the Ferox element, and then run to the Shadowmane, and cloak yourself. Ferox will wander around as it cant see you, until it reverts back.Repeat the process until its tamed.Make sure that the area is clear of any hostile creatures.

Addiction[]

As addiction of a Ferox in its shapeshifted giant form progresses, it gains a total of +200% Melee Damage Melee Damage, +50% Attack Speed and +25% Damage Resistance, at the cost of 90 seconds reduction of Transformation Lifetime (it won't stay in large mode as long).

Moreover, Ferox will require more element to shapeshift (up to 5) if it has a certain amount of addiction.

Cause[]

Each feed of the Element prolongs the Ferox's shapeshifted form to full, but increases addiction by 5%. These addiction persist even after it reverts back, and will slowly decay over time. At the same time, feeding the Ferox while taming, or if required more element, will further increase its addiction by 5% per feed.

Breeding[]

Unlike other creatures, Female Ferox cannot breed by default. It needs to be 95%+ addicted and in its original small form to breed (Any attempt to breed the female ferox below 95% will be prevented with the signal "Needs full addiction to breed" above the said Ferox). The male Ferox does not require any addiction to breed.

Utility[]

Ferox always appears as a small creature similar to a Jerboa. At random times while it is on the ground and near a survivor (sometimes at various spots), it will sniff and sneeze when it senses a nearby Element Dust Element Dust on the ground, and will proceed to dig up and give a few of it to the nearby survivor that it belongs to.

To transform the creature into its giant variant, it must be fed Element Element via putting it in any slot, similar to passive taming it. (You need to use the slot key instead of E/Y/Triangle) It can still be fed even while in its transformed state.

Ferox cannot be podded into a Cryopod Cryopod while in its aggressive form. You must wait until it is in its small form.

Controls[]

  • Cursor - Facing direction. Facing direction updates continuously while mounted and on the ground.
  • W / S - Move forward / backward.
  • LMB - Basic Attack
  • RMB - Ground Slam that debuffs enemies to prevent running and flying.
  • Space / Jump - Jump
    • Hold the hotkey to aim. A crosshair will appear to indicate that you are in-range of a surface you can stick to.
    • While stuck to a wall, tapping jump will bound upward. You can still hold to aim.
  • C / Crouch - Throw boulder
    • Hold the hotkey to gain a crosshair and the opportunity to aim more precisely.
  • X / Prone - Furied swipes
  • CTRL / PistolWhip - Roar

Roles[]

All Terrain Mount: The Ferox, due to its ability to cling to surfaces like the Deinonychus Deinonychus, super-jumping capabilities, and ability to transform from a shoulder pet to a mount enable both the Ferox and the rider to easily traverse any terrain. Keep in mind that it cannot scale a surface steeper than 90 degrees and is a mediocre swimmer. It also has fantastic damage and a devastating rock throw to deal damage from afar, even if it's clinging to a wall. They can even be given a high-quality helmet to greatly reduce damage taken.

Element Dust Producer: While inefficient, Ferox (small) may often produce the dust when picked up and it starts sniffing while on the shoulder, and thrown down to the ground.

Insulation: Like the Otter Otter, the Ferox, whether large and ridden or on the shoulder of a survivor, will give an Tek Insulation Insulation buff. The Ferox grants +225 Hyperthermic and +225 Hypothermic protection. This makes them an ideal mount to have in most cold or hot environments, such as the Arctic biome or Volcano biome in Genesis: Part 1.

Raid-Machine: When in its large form, the Ferox can lob boulders clicking C (when held, it will give time to aim). This is very effective in PvP as it allows you to destroy stone structures, including the Tek Replicator. This combined with a Tek Skiff, creates a formidable Raid-Machine and is difficult to defend against. When using this strategy in PvP, stay out of turret range, while throwing rocks with the Ferox.

Pet: The Ferox can ride on a Survivor's shoulder when in its small form. This, combined with its insulation buff and cute aesthetic, make the Ferox an ideal pet.

Transport: As Ferox (Large) you can press jump as soon as you land from another jump and you will gain increased momentum for the next jump.

Boss Killer: Due to its high attack speed, high damage and resistance to damage in full addiction, as well as the ability to wear a helmet, Ferox can be used to effectively kill Bosses.

Notes/Trivia[]

  • The name and word Ferox is Latin for "fierce", "wild", or "arrogant".
  • The ferox does not take fall damage, see Fall Damage for more info.
  • When transformed the Ferox resembles a Werewolf.
  • The Ferox in its aggressive form when mating while using the S+ Mutator will give you a aggressive form Ferox that doesn't return to its smaller form (needs Element Element to keep it in its aggressive form for this to work).
  • In addition to getting bigger and more powerful, the Ferox also gets some added bonuses with having Element in its system. Leveling a small Ferox will increase its stats in its large form. However, the opposite does not seem to be true.
  • Unlike the other passive tame method, there is no feed cooldown for Ferox. However, it can't be fed while in its transformed state when taming it this way.
  • The Ferox shares its Tek Insulation Insulation buff with the Basilosaurus Basilosaurus.
  • Carrying an Element or having one in its vicinity will cause the Ferox to sniff upwards for a moment. If the survivor is carrying one thereafter, it will often jump up, giving a gesture of wanting to have the element until it is either given one or the survivor carrying it leaves the element elsewhere.
  • The Ferox is inspired by the 'Gremlins' franchise with similar facial features, both large and small forms with a similar "allergic reaction" like when given element as the behaviour of a Gremlin. The ferox may also be inspired by Stitch the blue alien from Lilo & Stitch.
  • Like all Genesis: Part 1 exclusive creatures, the Ferox does not have a proper Dossier made by Helena, as Helena was not present as a normal survivor in the simulation.
  • Ferox is the only creature that can be both carried by players and ridden.
  • Leveling Movement Speed Movement Speed will not affect the speed of Ferox in large form. It will only affect its small form.
  • They may glitch under the ground when they change from large form to small form.
  • When raising Feroxes they will request element as a comfort food as opposed to kibble and other foods. They will not transform while maturing even when fed element in this manner.
  • The Ferox used to not retain its imprinting buff when transformed; this was fixed as of v309.4.
  • Feroxes provide a surprisingly large amount of hide for their size but due to the general difficulty in finding them, they are a poor consistent source of it.
  • Though the Ferox can teleport under the ground there is a glitch that results in first going from big to small, then it proceeds to fall out of the world to its death.
  • The Ferox in its aggressive form is a carnivore, and in its smaller form is an herbivore.
  • The Ferox cannot be fed Element Element when the survivor has the Cryo Cooldown debuff.

Bugs and Glitches[]

  • When the Ferox transforms either to its giant form or reverts back, any perishable items inside its inventory will have their timers reset.
  • When the Ferox is small and is picked up by a Gigantopithecus Gigantopithecus, it will humorously be placed between the apes' two feet and not on the shoulder.
  • Sometimes the small Ferox is missing its swimming animation.
  • For some odd reason, the Ferox can consume Ambergris (Genesis Part 1) Ambergris (Genesis: Part 1).
  • Ferox is currently bugged and will often disappear when re-logging or reloading an area. Please Cryopod Cryo your Ferox for now to ensure their safety until they are patched.
  • When staying still and using the Left attack, if the right arms swipe, they make no sound whereas attacking with the left arms do.
  • When the Ferox is hanging to the side of a cliff and does its Left attack while leaning off to one side, it will make no sound.
  • If the player rides the Ferox while it transforms back into its small form, the Ferox will knock off the rider and sometimes become glitched, forever staying in its large form unless logging out and back in or feeding Element to restart the Transformation Lifetime.
  • When transforming a bred Ferox its stats won't correspond correctly to its bred small form.
  • A 100% addicted ferox in small form which has consumed 1/4 element can glitch when cryoed and uncryoed. This will result into a visually small ferox which is stuck in the mechanics of a Ferox (Large), but cannot be ridden or attack. You cannot cryo again until you feed it another element to trigger the transformation process and await until it becomes small again.

Levels may not transfer over at all to Ferox (Large). After being tamed, bonus levels might not be added as well.

  • There is a chance that the Ferox (Large) will climb on nothing and lag all over the place. Restarting the program fixes this.
  • Ferox might glitch through the ground after getting small again.
  • Sometimes when you feed a max level Ferox they will duplicate with the same stats and level.
  • Cloned Ferox temporarily lose their [ Clone ] prefix while they are in their large form. It returns back when they are reverted.
  • When spawned in by console commands the Ferox cannot be fed element and therefore cannot transform into Ferox (Large).
  • Sometimes Ferox can duplicate itself when taming them.
  • The host on non dedicated session cannot use element near the Ferox in any way.
  • Ferox on the first transformation after tamed don't have a XP bar, don't get XP, and the stats don't update
