Wild

Andrewsarchus is a beast that's full of surprises. These ungainly creatures might seem sluggish while foraging for a meal, but they can move unexpectedly fast when provoked. Like certain other whippomorphs, Andrewsarchus will aggressively defend its territory against interlopers. With some distance between you, it may be possible to dodge a charging Andrewsarchus -- they don't exactly turn on a dime. Just don't expect a river or lake to protect you from one. As long as its feet can reach bottom, Andrewsarchus will plow its way right through deep water. These scavengers will tear into just about anything if hungry, but they've got a bit of a sweet tooth. I've seen many an agitated Andrewsarchus pacified by some honey.

Domesticated

Once tamed, Andrewsarchus is a reliably fast beast of burden, as long as you don't need it to take any corners at full speed. Its density in water also makes Andrewsarchus ideal for searching ocean floors for pearls, since it sinks so readily to the bottom. The preferred saddle design includes a mounted minigun to target foes, while the driver stays safe inside their airtight armored enclosure. Though a fully-armored Andrewsarchus can't absorb as much damage as some of the ARK's larger creatures, it still excels at harassing them.

Behavior[]

Andrewsarchus is not aggressive towards most passive and neutral wild creatures, and will walk peacefully amongst even small herbivores without bothering them. However, they will become hostile towards players, although their aggro range is not that large, it will fight back against any predators that attack them.

Appearance[]

Color Scheme and Regions[]

This section displays the Andrewsarchus's natural regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Andrewsarchus.

This information can be used to alter the Andrewsarchus's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID> in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 1 6 would color the Andrewsarchus's "" magenta.

Taming[]

For general info about domesticating a wild creature see Taming.

Sneak up on the Andrewsarchus, throw Giant Bee Honey in front of it, wait for it to eat, then sneak up and mount to begin ride taming. There will be white arrows pointing left and right (correlates to which direction it's running), when pressed and held at the correct time, the taming bar will progress. Whilst taming a red rage bar will start appearing behind the taming percentage, right before it fills up jump off and you won't be kicked off by it.

Note: When the Andrewsarchus is cornered or trapped, it will refuse to tame, resulting in loss of taming effectiveness.

Combat[]

This section describes how to fight against the Andrewsarchus.

Using a tamed Raptor to attack the Andrewsarchus from the side it will be almost impossible for it to land a hit on the Raptor due to the mix of speed and small knockback and the Andrewsarchus low turning radius at regular movement. At this point you can fire at the Andrewsarchus from a safe distance to help your Raptor finish off the Andrewsarchus.

Utility[]

The Andrewsarchus is maneuverable, with the ability to slide, charge, jump, sink to an ocean floor or rise above it, and is capable of intense speeds over time; with great stamina to match.

With your primary control for bites, it bites. Alternate control does a kick behind you that stuns creatures for a short period of time. The Andrewsarchus is capable of trampling rocks at full speed with no gathering for them, so prepare for that while fleeing the scene if you're looking for materials. Pressing C while sprinting will begin its charge, which is a short speed boost that can be done 3 times before needing to completely recharge them.

At full speeds, if you shift your camera behind you, the Andrewsarchus will drift to run backwards, which seems to give a VERY SMALL speed boost.

The turret uses Advanced Rifle Bullets.

Pressing ctrl will switch to turret mode (Andrewsarchus then is controlled by WASD). Left click is bite and right click is fire. Pressing CTRL again will switch back to mounted mode. Additionally, Holding the turret mode button will cause the Andrewsarchus to cling to the ocean floor.

Notes/Trivia[]

  • For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Andrewsarchus, see the relevant Wikipedia article.
  • As a member of the order Artiodactyla, Andrewsarchus is a relative of other even-toed hoofed animals like deer, swine, or cattle. Though specifically part of the Whippomorpha suborder, it is more closely related to Whales and Hippos. Its closest relatives however; are Entelodonts, one of which is also in ARK: the Daeodon, who is also a member of Whippomorpha. As some of the very few hoofed animals that were known to regularly kill and eat meat that have ever lived, both Andrewsarchus and Daeodon are quite literally "Sheep (or Pig) in Wolf's clothing".
