The Jerboa (Jur-bo-A) is one of the mammals of ARK: Survival Evolved. It appears on the Scorched Earth, Ragnarok, Valguero, Crystal Isles, and Genesis: Part 2 maps.

Basic Info[]

Scientifically speaking, Renopila amplexus is an adorable little fuzzball and I just want to hug it forever. Unfortunately, being harmless and lovable is inadequate as a defense mechanism in this wasteland, and that means Renopila is at the bottom of the food chain. It's an easy meal for predators and survivors alike, the latter of whom also value its hide. The locals refer to Renopila as a Jerboa, but while it does look similar in some ways, it is clearly unrelated. The fact that it does not hop is a dead giveaway. In fact, while Renopila generally fits into the clade Glires, it seems to share traits with both rodents and lagomorphs.

Domesticated

In addition to being the cutest little companion in the desert, hours of close study and/or cuddling have taught me that Renopila has an instinctive understanding of this land's weather patterns. When the weather is about to change, Renopila will suddenly start behaving differently, so taming Renopila does have practical uses that can justify its perch upon one's shoulder. Not that I need justification, but I'll take whatever excuse I can get.

Behavior[]

The Jerboa is used by survivors as a Weather Detector. In the wild the Jerboa is a shy, harmless creature that runs when attacked. Fleeing is its only means of defense, meaning it is easy prey for many predators.

Appearance[]

It seems like a miniature kangaroo, but its head and ears are extremely similar to a fennec fox. It has a long, flexible tail in which the fur grows thicker near the tip. Its eyes are large, and it usually has stripes on its back that differ in color from its normal coat. ARK's jerboa differ in nearly every way from real life jerboa. It's just the cutest little thing.

Color Scheme and Regions[]

This section displays the Jerboa's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Jerboa. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Jerboa will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.

This information can be used to alter the Jerboa's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID> in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6 would color the Jerboa's "paws and back" magenta.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]

Jerboa

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Taming[]

For general info about domesticating a wild creature see Taming.

KO Strategy[]

Boomerang it once or twice and it will go down. You can also simply hit it with your fists, because while it will run away, it is rather slow and a low-level player should be able to catch up to it. It is one of the easiest creatures to tame due to its inability to fight back and low torpor. However, its low torpor means it wakes up fairly fast, so make sure you have some form of torpor-inducing agent like Narcotics or Narcoberries on hand. On mobile you do not have boomerangs so simply shoot a single tranq arrow at it with a primitive bow, or a whack or two with a club/fists.

Taming Food[]

Jerboa always spawns at level 1. The following lists are for Jerboas spawned by mods, console commands or in Dungeons (Mobile) as they are not limited to be level 1.

Combat[]

General[]

Will attempt to flee when attacked.

Strategy[]

A few hits of your fists will knock it out. One hit with a boomerang or a tranquilizing arrow will also do the trick if you want to have it as easy as possible.

Weaponry[]

Fists, a spear, bow and arrow or anything else.

Danger[]

Jerboa itself is not a threat, as it will never attack, but players should be wary of other creatures in the area that may attack.

Weaknesses[]

This creature will run away when you attack it, but it has very low torpor making it easy to knock out. Although they do run, they are not that fast so it's easy to catch up to it.

Utility[]

A tamed Jerboa can be picked up to ride on the player's shoulder by approaching it and pressing the "use" key (E, Y, Triangle) and can be picked up by any other creature that can pick up dinos though you can not pick up a wild Jerboa . To remove it from your shoulder, double tap E, Y, Triangle, if looking at things such as bushes, F, X, Square will toss the Jerboa without harvesting, however if you are riding another creature, you will not be able to pick it back up without dismounting.
While riding on your shoulder, you only incur half of the weight of items held by the Jerboa. For example, if the Jerboa's inventory weight added up to 20, you would only have 10 added to your weight, making them useful as backpacks.

Jerboas can also wear helmets, giving them some protection against attacks, although their naturally low health still makes them quite fragile.

Roles[]

  • Weather Detector: The Jerboa can also warn you about incoming weather conditions such as Sand Storms through a mixture of motions and growls. Keep them close and seek shelter quickly once they start to alert you. A Jerboa perched on your shoulder will still make distinct growls and various motions when harsh weather is incoming.
    • Lightning Storm: The Jerboa will make a low toned growl-like sound while lowering its ears and wagging its tail.

Jerboa Electrical Storm

    • Sand Storm: The Jerboa will emit a high pitched chirping-like sound while it seems to bark at the sky.

Jerboa Sandstorm

    • Heat Wave: The Jerboa will make a medium-toned growl while digging and pawing at the ground.

Jerboa Heat Wave

    • Rain: The Jerboa will make a sniffing and whimpering sound and stare at the sky.

Jerboa Rain

  • Backpack: Jerboa only incur half the weight onto the player with what is in their inventory. So a full stack of sand weights 25 instead of 50, increasing the amount a footed survivor can bring on each run. Just level them with weight.
  • Pet: For its simple cuteness and being more common than many other shoulder pets like the Otter Otter and Mesopithecus Mesopithecus, people usually prefer it as a pet. In fact, it is probably one of the most popular pets in the entire game.

Notes[]

For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Jerboa, see the relevant Wikipedia article.

  • Jerboa is a real animal. However, the genus Renopila that the Dossier mentions is fictional. The Jerboa in-game resembles a creature with a head of a Fennec Fox and body based off the real Jerboa (rabbit-like legs). The creature that resembles the Ark Jerboa the most as a whole is the Springhare of Africa. Even so, the skull is not similar to any rodent, but is more carnivoran in structure and dentition.
  • Jerboas only spawn at level 1. However, they will spawn at normal levels on ARK: Survival Evolved Mobile, though in rare chances on PC, Xbox or PS4, they can spawn at levels like level 11.
  • When breeding Jerboa, take care to imprint and feed them very quickly, as Jerboa will starve to death in a very short amount of time.
    • Force feeding can be used to increase survivability.
  • Also for breeding, Plant y seeds work well for the baby phase because they are low weight and do not spoil. But be warned they will not eat from a trough during baby phase so you should have berries and plant species seeds ready.
  • It is likely that the Ark Jerboa has an acute ability to detect very slight changes in its environment. By feeling pressure and air flow changes, hearing with their giant ears and smelling with their nose, this is the most likely way the Jerboa is able to predict the weather, giving it a survival edge despite its lack of good defense and small size. Various animals on earth can also predict the weather to a degree, often through similar means of feeling pressure and wind changes, smelling rain, and hearing distant rumbling of storms.
  • In the dossier, it says that “the locals call it jerboa, although sharing many similarities it is clearly unrelated” which tells us that it isn’t at all related to it’s real life counterpart.
  • Both Jerboa and Deinonychus Deinonychus are the only creatures with more than one idle animation.
  • If a Jerboa is transferred to Aberration, the Jerboa will give a signal during - but not prior to - an earthquake with the same motion and vocalizations used for the Lightning Storm on Scorched Earth.
