Oil is a resource in ARK: Survival Evolved.
It can be harvested from dark stones near oil patches in the ocean by using a Pickaxe. It can also be obtained from above-water oil deposits found in and around Whitesky Peak on the island, the top left snow mountain on Ragnarok, or by killing Basilosaurus, Trilobite, Leech, and Enforcer. Another way to acquire Oil is to tame creatures that produce Oil, such as the Dung Beetle.
Crafting with Oil
Oil can be refined in a Refining Forge or Industrial Forge to create Gasoline.
If it is put into a Preserving Bin together with Sparkpowder and Cooked Meat or Cooked Prime Meat, Cooked Meat Jerky and Prime Meat Jerky can be created.
Oil is also needed to craft the following items:
- Absorbent Substrate
- Grenade
- Homing Underwater Mine
- Industrial Cooker
- Industrial Forge
- Industrial Grill
- Industrial Grinder
- Fabricator
- Propellant
- Re-Fertilizer
- Silencer Attachment
- Soap
- Spray Painter
- Tripwire Alarm Trap
- Vault
Full list of items crafted with Oil
Producing Oil
Oil can be produced in the following ways:
- Dung Beetle passively produce Oil and Fertilizer with Feces while on wander.
- Hesperornis Egg can be turned into Oil in the Cooking Pot or Industrial Cooker.
- Tusoteuthis and Basilosaurus produce Oil (Tusoteuthis) passively in their inventory.
Gathering Oil
Oil can be mined with either a Stone Pick or a Metal Pick in the ocean. The Stone Pick yields 0-1 oil per oil node, while the Metal Pick yields 0-10 oil per oil node. Besides using tools it is also possible to use a Ankylosaurus or Dunkleosteus to mine oil very effectively.
Oil (Tusoteuthis) is gathered from the inventory of dead Tusoteuthis and slowly accumulates in the inventory of a tamed Tusoteuthis or Basilosaurus.

There are 3 main environments where oil nodes spawn: the ocean, Underwater caves and along the beach of the Snow Biome. It is also possible to obtain Oil by harvesting dead Tek Creatures. See the interactive Resource Maps for all occurrences in the official maps as well as some Mod maps.
Ocean oil mining
Oil nodes can be found all around the map in the oceans. Oil nodes in the ocean are easy to spot as they release a dark stream of oil which floats upwards.
To effectively mine oil nodes in the ocean it's a good idea to tame an underwater dinosaur, such as a powerful Megalodon, or a fast and nimble Ichthyosaurus.
A more effective method is to tame a Dunkleosteus, which can gather oil nodes by itself while defending against Plesiosaur.
While relatively rare, large clusters of oil nodes can also be found in various ocean floor locations. One such cluster can be found at 10.2 latitude and 25.5 longitude, and yields 300-500 oil depending on harvesting method.
Underwater cave oil mining
The highest density of oil nodes can be found in underwater caves, it's possible to get large amounts of oil from just 1 underwater cave. To get to the underwater caves it's recommendable to use both an underwater dinosaur and some way to hold your breath for extended periods underwater, such as Lazarus Chowder or a SCUBA Tank.
It's also possible to get an Ankylosaurus down into most underwater caves. With an Ankylosaurus in the caves they can be cleared in a matter of seconds.
Snow Biome beach mining
If you don't feel confident underwater, it is possible to gather oil above ground. However these above ground oil nodes all spawn in the treacherous Snow Biome and on various icebergs.
A good strategy to gather these oil nodes effectively as a 2-man team, is to use a Quetzal and a Ankylosaurus. Simply pick up the Ankylosaurus (with your teammate on it), and fly past all the oil nodes, letting the Ankylosaurus mine them on the fly. The weight stat of the Ankylosaurus doesn't matter as all is carried by the quetzal. An Argentavis also works as it can go slightly faster than the quetzal, however it can't carry as much as the quetzal can in most cases.
Scorched Earth
On the Scorched Earth map, up to 16 Oil can be collected from red Jug Bugs by getting close to them and pressing E, , . Oil can also be gathered autonomously by placing an Oil Pump on an oil vein or by harvesting dead Rock Elementals.
Aberration
Other than the above main method, the only source of oil rocks are found at the surfaces of the map and the deepest depths of the red zone which has huge oil rocks. However, the surface contains many dangers such as Reaper King and the accessibility during daytime (the sun will scorch anything during dawn and afternoon) while the red zone contains many rock drakes along with radiation . The other method is killing Trilobite near water or by using the Dung Beetle to get oil via feces.
Extinction
In Extinction, Oil can be harvested from the corpse of a dead Enforcer or Defense Unit.
