~ Drake on Oviraptor

The Oviraptor(o-vih-RAP-tor)is a Dinosaur in ARK: Survival Evolved.

Basic Info

Dossier

  • Wild: Oviraptor philodator is a small-to-medium sized carnivore, common in the jungles and beaches of the island. Despite being a carnivore, Oviraptor's primary source of food is eggs, which it steals from nests. Unlike any other creature, Oviraptor seems to be able to surreptitiously steal these eggs usually without attracting the attention of the irate mother.
  • Domesticated: Too small to fight or ride, Oviraptor is still one of the more commonly tamed creatures on the island. Its pheromone release ensures an increased stream of eggs from nearby mated wild creatures, for breeding, eating, or cooking kibble. And Oviraptor will autonomously do the dirty work of collecting them on your behalf without attracting unwanted attention. They also make quite adorable sounds, so many children simply like to keep them as rather strange companions.
  • Known Information: In an incredible feat of natural selection, Oviraptor seems to emit a chemical pheromone that affects many creatures as an aphrodisiac. Mated creatures are much more likely to... "create" new eggs while Oviraptor is around, which allows the oviraptor to go about its business unperturbed.

Note that this creature was recently released, so official taming data is not yet available.
The information presented here is based on anecdotal evidence and may not be entirely accurate.
For a level-dependent count of time and resources needed, try an external taming calculator, but keep in mind that their numbers are also unofficial.

Preferred Food

Unlike all other creatures, the Oviraptor can only be tamed by feeding it eggs (standard or fertilized). Once tamed, it will eat raw meat like any other carnivore.

Heavier eggs are preferred.

  1. Giganotosaurus Egg Giganotosaurus Egg
  2. Quetzal Egg Quetzal Egg
  3. Rex Egg Rex Egg
  4. Spino Egg Spino Egg
  5. Bronto Egg Bronto Egg
  6. Carno Egg Carno Egg
  7. Dino Egg Other Eggs

It will eat the first egg in it's inventory unless there's a Giganotosaurus, Quetzal, Bronto, Spino or Rex egg. Spino and Carno eggs take 140 food. Rex and Quetzal eggs give 200 food, Giganotosaurus and Bronto eggs give 300 food.

Disliked Food

The Oviraptor's taming effectiveness will drop if it eats the following eggs:

KO Strategy

Oviraptor are small, quick, and fragile. Their small size and high speed make them difficult to hit once attacked, so try to get it backed into a corner before you start firing on it. At lower levels, a Wooden Club may be preferable, as a bow could potentially kill it with a single shot.

Alternatively, it can be picked up by an Argentavis or Pteranodon and moved somewhere safe or shot at by another player.

Utility

Once tamed, if placed on wander an egg icon will appear above it and nearby dinos (works fine on scorpions, contrary to popular belief), possibly indicating an increase in egg production. The icon curretly appears on everything including mammals but only while the it is on wandering and NOT following anything.

Notes/Trivia

  • Dossier released on 07/31/2015[1]
  • Oviraptor means "egg thief" or "egg robber" in Latin. It got this name because the first fossils of Oviraptor were found on what was believed to be a nest of eggs belonging to the small ceratopsid Protoceratops. Discoveries in the 1990's revealed that these eggs in fact belonged to Oviraptor, meaning it had died while brooding its eggs and not trying to steal them as was originally thought.
  • Released with update v226.0 on December 1st, 2015.
