The Triceratops(try-SAIR-uh-tops), or simply Trike, is one of the dinosaurs in ARK: Survival Evolved.
Basic Info
Dossier
- Wild: Apparently a cross-breed of a Triceratops and Styracosaurus, Triceratops styrax has both the characteristic three-horned face of Triceratops and the prominent horned-ridge of Styracosarus.
- Domesticated: A common mount for those that ride dinosaurs, Triceratops doubles as both pack animal and combat war horse.
- Known Information:Normally a very docile grazing animal, Triceratops becomes extremely aggressive once angered. Triceratops will chase down would-be predators (and egg-stealers) with incredible prejudice. Triceratops bony ridge is very effective as cover from frontal attack, and the creature's charge is incredibly dangerous. I've seen Triceratops have an especially hostile reaction to the Tyrannosaurus on the island, with herds attacking in groups.
Behavior
They are not aggressive. When attacked, they charge and buck the enemy with their heads. Their bucking attack knocks the player back, which can make Trikes a much more dangerous foe near cliffs or steep hills. This attack can be easily dodged however.
Appearance
The Trike is a relatively small stout quadrupedal herbivore, with a body has little to no defining features. However, it sports a large bony head equipped with an equally bony frill, which is adorned with multiple horns or spikes. Three larger horns also appear on the animal's head, one over each eye, and one on the nose.

Hunting
While it is not difficult to dodge the attack of a Trike, they deal significant damage, and the knock-back can deal additional fall damage if the player is knocked off of a hill. It is entirely possible to bring down a Trike using only a melee weapon if the player is careful to avoid the head, staying near the Trike's side or behind. However, it is recommended to use a ranged weapon such as a bow. It is a good strategy to enrage the Trike from afar, using a ranged weapon. The Trike will then charge the player. Because of the relatively slow speed of Triceratops, the player will have plenty of time to continue shooting the Trike, especially if they back away constantly. Then, once the Trike gets close, it is advisable to switch to a melee weapon and finish it off. By this method, players may minimize the amount of time spent within striking range of an angry Triceratops. Note that the Triceratops' attack extends to its sides, so you should try to stay behind it as its attack is hard to dodge otherwise.

KO Strategy
Triceratops are rather slow, you can kite one easily. Keep firing tranquilizer arrows with several seconds in between each arrow to allow the Torpor level to increase over time while backing away slowly. You can also look for a stuck Trike, which will be incredibly easy to tame as it can't attack you.
- 5 - 15 Tranquilizer Arrows
- ~30 Stones
Utility
Roles
- Transport: While slow, has a very good base carrying capacity. Good for local transport, but will get stuck often when travelling through woods.
- Gatherer: Excellent for gathering materials. Especially for gathering berries.

Notes/Trivia
- Can collect berries, thatch, and smaller amounts of wood; collecting berries in this manner will yield extremely high amounts of berries compared to collecting them by hand. This makes it incredibly useful for feeding and taming other herbivores.
- Its full name means "Three-horned Face".
- When dismounting, you will stand on the back of the trike. If you crouch you can hide behind it's large face plate for cover from attacks. It is also possible to shoot from the top of the trike while it fights. (don't move or you may fall off.)
